4-patch

 

This block is divided down the middle, both horizontally as well as vertically, into four quadrants. All four cuadrants are alike, sometimes mirroring each other and at other times simply rotated within the block.

 The basic unit within the block is a square.

This square, in turn, can be sub-divided - in two triangles, for example.

Let's see what happens when we join and rotate this sub-unit in different directions within a 4-patch grid:
