Where to go next?

We hope you have enjoyed these beginner tutorials and that they have inspired you in your first quilting steps. This, however, is but the beginning of a wonderful journey. The question is how to continue.

The tutorials shared here attempt to be different and not repeat what can be widely found over the Web. This is why we have concentrated on handpiecing and hand applique. We have provided an illustrated tutorial por paper-piecing, and the choice is give to you whether to hand or machine sew with this technique. We believe this is a good way to start. As you continue to learn, however, you will probably reach a point where you will want to work faster. It's always nice to have a hand sewn project on hand, but this does take time.

So it is time to move on to machine piecing techniques. You will find many tutorials on the Web covering different aspects of machine piecing and quilting. The challenge lies in how to bring all that information together in a way that makes sense to you. Fortunately, other teachers have thought ahead and prepared excellent materials with the beginner quilter in mind. So I will not try to repeat information here, but rather point out the resources that I as a teacher have found invaluable, and which I believe will be very helpful for you, too..

To start you out with your quilting library, I recommend either one (or both) of these books:

Quiltmaking For Beginners, by Lynn G. Kough. You can read my review for this book here.

How to Quilt: A Beginner's Guide to Quilting, by Penny Halgren. A review of this book is also provided here.

If, on the other hand, you are more of a visual person and learn better by watching a video, choose instead the Beginner’s Guide to Quilting, Vol. II – Robin’s Nest Quilting DVD Mentor. This resource includes 4 DVDs with  7¾ hours of great quilting instruction, demonstration and guidance, along with a step-by-step guide, written in the same informative style as The Beginner’s Guide to Quilting, Vol. I – including more than 224 full color photographs loaded onto 125 pages of easy-to-understand quilting instructions.

Don't forget to visit our Resource section, too! Here you will find links to other online tutorials, free patterns, shops and more.

Happy Quilting!
